Sample 1]: Essay on Flags (298 words)
A flag is a
symbol, an emblem, or a marker of an organization or a country that has been
used for hundreds of years. It is also a symbol that brings people together.
According to the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, a flag is defined as
"a piece of cloth with a special colored design on it that may be the
symbol of a particular country or organization or may have a particular
meaning." The cloth flag was first introduced in Rome.
A flag is
used to refer to a particular country or organization and its beliefs and
values. It is used on the happiest or saddest of days. On a happy day, the flag
is hoisted by the chief guest and the program is cheered up. On the contrary,
on a sad day, the flag is kept at half-mast, especially to mourn in honor of a
famous person who has just died. When a special guest visits a country, flags
are kept to fly or flutter.
On the other
hand, a flag is also used as a means of communication while constructing roads,
fighting in a war, commencing or starting a game, or demonstrating something.
It is also used to mark the victory of something like mountaineering. Flying
the flag is also common in Europe and America.
Every
political party or country has its own flag with the special meaning of each
symbol on it. The Nepalese triangular flag, which is itself unique in the
world, has the moon and the sun on each triangle. The sun and the moon indicate
that Nepal and the Nepalese will remain free until the sun and the moon rise in
the sky.
On the
whole, a flag represents that a country or an organization is free and has its
own identity.
