What is the difference between should and had better

Should

had better

Should is used to give a suggestion.

Had better is used to give a warning.

See the following example of ‘should’ and ‘had better’

You should start getting up earlier.

You had better not be late again or you’ll lose your job.

I saw a really great action movie last night, you should see it.

The movie’s going to start soon, we had better leave soon or we’ll miss it.

For awesome shopping, you should check out.

It’s a cold day, so you had better dry your hair before going outside. If you don’t, you’ll catch a cold.

B. Complete the sentences with should or shouldn't. Use one of these verbs.

Difference between should and shouldn’t

Should is a modal verb.  It is used to make recommendations or give advice. Should not or Shouldn’t makes a sentence negative.  So you are NOT recommending something, NOT advising something, NOT expecting something or “It’s not a good idea.”
